Boat trip to Horn Island
- MDMR GPS data shows the boat carrying Wells left a private Ocean Springs-area dock at about 9:56 a.m. and arrived at Horn Island at 11:14 a.m.
- JCSO said Wells was last seen near the island at about 3 p.m. Warren Hudson, the only member of the three-person outbound companion group publicly named in the reviewed official/reputable reporting, also placed his last sighting around that time. The other two companions are not publicly named in those sources.
The public record does not establish what happened to Wells after the last confirmed sighting. [1] [9]

Part 1 supplies Hudson’s passenger-to-vessel identification. In Part 3, Hudson names Wyatt as the person who got the motor to trim down, pulled the drain plug and got the boat onto plane; in Part 4, Hudson describes the person performing those same actions as “the captain of the boat.” Hudson said he rode on Bart’s 24-foot Tide Line and identified the third vessel as an 18-foot Palm Beach. Shepherd said he traveled separately on his uncle’s boat.
Official corroboration: This identifies Wyatt as the Triton’s captain/operator in Hudson’s named account, not as an official finding. MDMR GPS corroborates the documented boat’s launch, route and arrival, but no released agency record names it as Wyatt’s Triton, identifies its operator or confirms Hudson’s passenger-to-vessel account. Hudson’s interview series does not separately timestamp who held the helm at the exact 9:56 a.m. departure second. [20] [22] [24] [33]

Boat trouble and return to shore
- A teen called Sea Tow around 4 p.m., reporting that the bilge pump had stopped and the boat was taking on water. The caller said roughly seven people were aboard and “everyone” then aboard was in good health. The released audio and records used here do not name the caller.
- Sea Tow later said the vessel owner canceled assistance because help had been obtained elsewhere. The reviewed MDMR/CBS records identify the owner by role, not by name.
- MDMR GPS data shows the boat left Horn Island at 4:31 p.m., traveled slowly for about 2.75 miles, resumed normal operation, entered Fort Bayou around 5:52 p.m., and reached the dock at 6:06 p.m. It was taken from the water at Fort Bayou at 7:19 p.m.
The call and GPS track document the vessel’s condition and movement; they do not establish Wells’ location after the last sighting. [1] [9]

Tatum material: Hudson said water reached the battery compartment, the bilge pump was not clearing it, the motor was not operating normally and another boat towed them until the vessel could get on plane. Hudson’s Parts 3 and 4 identify Wyatt as the Triton’s captain/operator during that emergency return: Part 3 names Wyatt performing the motor, drain-plug and planing actions, while Part 4 calls the person who performed those same actions “the captain of the boat.” Hudson also said a friend repeatedly called for Wells to board, but Wells stayed with a young woman—later called “Katie” by Tatum—and planned another ride.
Official corroboration: The Sea Tow recording and MDMR GPS independently corroborate a failed bilge pump, incoming water, outside help, a 4:31 p.m. departure and an initially slow return. They do not identify the operator. Agencies have said witnesses reported Wells was not aboard when the boat left. No official release corroborates Wyatt’s captain/operator identity, that Wells was repeatedly told to board, chose another ride, or identifies Katie. [21] [22] [33]

About 11 p.m.–midnight
Family learns Wells did not return
- Christine Wonsley identified Warren Hudson as the person who called her around 11:07 p.m. Hudson later said he contacted the Coast Guard. The Coast Guard confirmed that a friend called around 11 p.m. but did not itself identify the caller; it said the contact did not require Coast Guard assistance.
- Wonsley then found that Wells’ phone location appeared to be on the mainland. MDMR records show she called that agency at 11:49 p.m. and was directed to JCSO. A redacted JCSO incident report records her missing-person call at 12:22 a.m. July 5.
- Tashema Hands, Wonsley’s friend and the mother of Wells’ friend Jayvon Williams, said she used location information and retrieved Wells’ phone for the family. The reviewed record does not reliably identify the residence, its owner/parent, or the person who possessed the phone before it was handed over.
- Elmore Wonsley retrieved Wells’ keys and car from a different residence—the unnamed home where Wells had stayed on July 3. The family’s concern that phone content may have been deleted remains an allegation, not a publicly established forensic finding.

Hudson also said Wells’ phone was left with several other phones and denied accessing or deleting data.
Official corroboration: Wonsley publicly identified Hudson as her late caller, and the Coast Guard confirmed a friend contacted it around 11 p.m. The released official record does not authenticate Tatum’s screenshots, confirm the exact call duration, establish who handled Wells’ phone, or resolve the deletion allegation. Multi-agency search begins
- At 1:38 a.m., MDMR records show Ocean Springs police were advised JCSO would lead the case.
- Elmore Wonsley said he traveled to Horn Island with one of Wells’ football coaches early that morning. The reviewed response chronology does not name that coach. Private citizens, JCSO, MDMR, National Park Service personnel and other agencies also searched the island and surrounding water.
- MDMR launched a patrol vessel at about 8 a.m. Three drone attempts were limited by a software problem and heat-related battery failure.
- At 12:26 p.m., Coast Guard Sector Mobile received JCSO’s request for assistance, broadcast an urgent marine notice and deployed a helicopter. At 12:31 p.m., JCSO issued its public missing-person notice.

- With consent, MDMR reviewed the boat’s Garmin track to focus the search near Horn Island’s northwest tip.

- MDMR sonar searches were inconclusive and ended because of adverse weather. At 9:52 p.m., MDMR requested Coast Guard synthetic-aperture-radar data for further scans.

Official corroboration: MDMR’s released Garmin track independently confirms that the boat left at 4:31 p.m., traveled slowly for about 2.75 miles and later resumed normal speed. It does not identify who pulled or replaced the plug. Life360 data and the full private media set Tatum described have not been released or authenticated by an agency. [21] [29]

Body located off Horn Island
A U.S. National Park Service ranger found a body in the water near Horn Island’s northwestern tip. The individual ranger was not named in the reviewed reports. The body was taken to Jackson County Coroner Bruce Lynd’s office later that morning; Wells’ family publicly identified him that afternoon. [1] [3]

He said his last exchange with Wells occurred before the fight while Wells was walking toward “Wyatt’s” boat and that he told Wells he loved him. Carter’s and Wyatt’s surnames are not verified in the reviewed record.
Official corroboration: Shepherd’s earlier public interviews corroborate that the voice was his and that the fight did not involve Wells. JCSO has not publicly adopted his full fight chronology, identified the unnamed participants or established the clip’s connection to Wells’ death. [24]

- The family and its attorneys met District Attorney Angel Myers McIlrath.

- Crump said McIlrath committed to presenting the completed investigation to a grand jury, consistent with the county’s standard process for non-natural deaths.

Family and community members attended the funeral at Center Pointe Church. Rev. Al Sharpton announced a $50,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction; Tyler Perry matched it, bringing the total to $100,000. [10]
Separately, estate attorney Gary Bufkin sent evidence-preservation notices dated July 20 concerning communications, media, metadata and location records. The notices said civil litigation was reasonably anticipated; the reviewed report did not establish that a civil complaint had been filed. The recipients were not named. [19]

- The preliminary report listed both cause and manner of death as “undetermined pending investigation.”
- It found no skull fractures, skin lacerations or deep-tissue injuries. A large area of red discoloration at the back of the head was described as inconclusive and requiring more investigation.
- Decomposition and the prior state autopsy limited the examination. The organs and neck structures were not present for the second exam, which the report noted is not unusual after a first autopsy.
- The independent pathologist could not determine whether water entered the lungs, whether there was a neck injury, whether Wells was conscious on entering the water, or whether non-accidental factors contributed.
“Could not rule out” is not a finding that foul play occurred. [7]

A July 5 search-information document, made public through reporting, listed Wells’ alcohol intake as “heavy,” based on what witnesses told investigators. This is a documented witness report—not a measured blood-alcohol result. The state toxicology findings were still pending. [9]

Gary Bufkin, attorney for Wells’ estate, sent subpoenas to Facebook, TikTok and Snapchat. This was an evidence-preservation or discovery step connected to anticipated civil litigation—not a filed death finding, criminal charge or proof of wrongdoing by any person. [19]

Tatum material: The episode relayed unverified allegations involving cocaine, an argument with Wells at about 6 p.m., and Wells with an unnamed woman in the water. Tatum also summarized messages attributed to “Katie” as saying friends told Wells to board and that she did not see him leave on the original boat. Tatum withheld the names connected to the drug, argument and water claims; Katie’s surname and identity are not officially verified.

He said Wells last unlocked it with Face ID at about 2:17–2:18 p.m. July 4, and that the phone then traveled off Horn Island by boat and car. Garrett said Snapchat data had been deleted between Wells' last use and the family's retrieval of the phone, but he did not identify who performed a deletion, give a deletion time or attribute intent.
